Salty Wafers
A Romanian heritage snack with deep cultural roots and unforgettable taste.
Romanian Culinary Heritage
Since ancient times, Eastern Europe’s Romania was well known as a cradle of strong civilization and culture. Home cooking from scratch was always part of the traditional local Romanian cuisine.
Romania is situated at the crossroads between East and West, between Asia, Middle-East and Europe. Here, the households, the language, the food and the way of life have gained vast influences of oriental accents.
Food ingredients, spices and aromas have always played a strong part of traditional Romanian cooking. New textures and recipes that stimulate the taste buds are all part of the influences of travelers throughout the centuries.
Romania is also known as a great producer and exporter of exquisite wine. A large variety of reds and whites bring deep and long-lasting taste bud pleasure to the knowledgeable wine drinker.
Over the centuries, to have a great companion for wine tasting and enjoyment, certain snacks have been created and baked just for the delight of the consumer.
About the Product
This Salty Wafer snack, developed maybe by accident a couple of hundreds of years back, is a unique combination of crispy tenderness of a wafer with the salty taste of any munchy-like snack, finished with a faint oriental influence of cumin — the spice that goes, oh so well, with any drink.
Transmitted mostly verbally from generation to generation, the recipe and cooking methods of this fabulous crispy snack remain a well-kept secret. Most anyone can make a snack from scratch, but very few can achieve the crispiness, tenderness and texture of Salty Wafers.
Baked at the right temperature, using the right press, for the right amount of time, this recipe produces mouth-watering results that any beer or wine drinker longs after.
How It All Started
Our recipe was developed and perfected by the grandmother of my best friend over 25 years ago. She started with a rudimentary press on top of her gas stove, baking each wafer one by one.
Later on, my best friend took production to the next level with dual electrical presses, baking eight wafers at a time and increasing productivity as demand soared throughout the country.
Today, they sell all over Romania — in small family-owned grocery stores and directly to the public.
I was lucky enough to be let in on the secret recipe, and I truly believe that all wine and beer drinkers in the world would love this snack.
